What Do You Feel Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Blogs in the Classroom?

  1. I believe there are many advantages to blogging in the classroom. The biggest advantage that I can think of is that students will be more engaged in contributing to a blog because it is on the computer, as opposed to writing things down to turn in. If you're using it as a communication with parents tool, parents can access the information anywhere that has internet access and they don't have to rely on a standard paper newsletter. Blog posts also update immediately, which means viewers get the most recent information possibe. As described on a page in your site, there are many uses for blogs in the classroom that will only help students learn more.

The biggest disadvantage that I can see is all students do not have internet access at home, which means they may not be able to get the information or contribute to the blog. The other big disadvantage that I see is that there are limited numbers of computers in the classroom and limited availability of the computer labs.
Overall, I think the advantages really outweigh the disadvantages and can be a great communication and learning tool for any classroom.

  2. Some advantages of blogs are that they allow for collaborative learning. Students that don't like to speak up in class have a voice with the blog. They are a great way to communicate with parents and students without having to send papers home.

A big disadvantage is the need for internet access to view the blog and make comments. Some students do not have access to the internet at home, and the teacher will have to make sure they are not at a disadvantage because of this. The teacher will also need to be prepared to monitor and approve comments that are made. This could be time consuming if there is a lot of activity on the blog.

  3. All of the previous posts show how blogging has many advantages. It is a wonderful way to communicate with and between students, parents, and teachers. Blogging can also be used to promote collaborative learning, problem-solving,and ELA skills. a classroom blog gives students a place to display their digital creations.
There are disadvantages though. As with all technology, there are times when the blogging site may have technical difficulties. The school's internet may be out. Any of these problems can play havoc on a lesson plan that centers on technology.
In my school, we have many families that do not have internet access at home, so a classroom blog cannot be the only or main method of communicating with parents.
The teacher also has to be ready to monitor all postings and comments for appropriateness.

  4. The advantages are endless, you are meeting students at their levels, you are using technology, you offer them a safe place to display and talk about work, you offer a safe place to ask questions and learn.
But as good as it is it comes with disadvantages, students could take advantage of the freedom of the blog and show bad behavior. You will also have to fight the argument that students don't have access to computers outside of the classroom. You might even face issues with parents not wanting their children to participate in the blog.(internet security issues)

  5. One of the biggest advantages to blogs is collaboration. It is a great place to share ideas just like we are right now. You can get some great ideas that you never have thought of before. As for the disadvantages, I would have to say the risk of a student posting something inappropriate on there. It is also not a good tool to use for non-readers/non-writers.

  6. One advantage to blogging is students are using technology to respond to different information. I always find my students are more engaged when they are able to use a computer or sometime of technology to complete a task. Another advantage to blogging is that students are working on their writing skills. Disadvantages to blogging could include students using a blog inappropriately. There would have to be strict guidelines they would have to use. Also, blogs are public, so there may be some issues with Internet security. Even though this could be a disadvantage, I think it could be a good teaching point to teach students about how to use the Internet safely.

  7. Collaboration is a big advantage to blogging. It can also be used to teach proper ways of communicating with each other, spelling, grammar etc... The one down side that I see is that student misbehavior could be a major problem.

  8. The advantages to blogs would be the ability to give students an additional platform for their learning and another way to get help where they need it, and it would be a great tool to communicate with parents about class events and what is going on during the class. I think it would be a great way to help motivate students to participate in class where they may not before.

The biggest disadvantage would be if students and families do not have internet access and would not be able to participate in the blogging activities outside of the school.

  9. I believe the biggest advantage is having the open lines of communication with parents, students, and even administrators. These people will be able to read any updates or important information that the teacher posts and respond if they have questions.
The biggest disadvantage would be that all students and/or parents will not have computer access.

  10. The advantages of using a blog will be to collaborate with other students, parents and administrators in a time efficient manner. The disadvantage of using a blog would be the time to create and monitor a blog page.

  11. Advantages would be collaboration and using a current technology to reinforce learning. Disadvantages would be accessibility for students without internet or students with reading/writing disabilities. And as Richard and others have mentioned monitoring the blog could be require time.

  12. I agree with all the comments that have been mentioned regarding the advantages and disadvantages of blogging. One disadvantage that I don't think has been mentioned is that even with blogging one does not have that face-to-face time. And, although I love technology and all the wonderful things about it, sometimes I just want to have an old fashion conversation. I feel that I am constantly editing whatever I write on the Internet but when I am speaking with someone in person I feel less restrained by trying to sound perfect.
